Sagat: The Origin of the Scar on His Chest
Among the Four Kings of Street Fighter, one character debuted even before Street Fighter II — Sagat. The cross-shaped scar on his chest is a mark left by Street Fighter 1, running through the entire series.
The Muay Thai king
Sagat is a top fighter from Muay Thai, tall and imposing, his bald head and eyepatch instantly recognizable. With a pair of devastating "Muay Thai legs" he ruled the scene, serving as the final boss of the original Street Fighter and the era's recognized strongest.
In those days, Sagat was synonymous with "unbeatable".
The defeat in the original
Everything changed in Street Fighter 1's final match. A young Ryu fought his way to Sagat. In that brutal bout, Ryu was pushed to his limit and finally struck with a Shoryuken, smashing into Sagat's chest and carving a deep, cross-shaped scar.
That punch didn't just scar Sagat's chest — it planted an obsession in his heart. The great Muay Thai king had lost to a nameless nobody.
An obsession carved in flesh
That scar became Sagat's lifelong obsession. Seeking revenge, he joined Shadaloo and became one of M. Bison's Four Heavenly Kings. On the surface, he was Bison's enforcer; underneath, only one thing mattered — a rematch with Ryu, to win back his lost pride.
So Sagat, strictly speaking, isn't purely evil. He has his own pride and obsession; he just chose the wrong door. Players tend to feel both respect and sympathy for him.
The meaning of the scar
The scar on Sagat's chest is one of Street Fighter's most classic pieces of "body storytelling". It links Street Fighter 1 and Street Fighter 2, and sows the grudge between Sagat and Ryu that never fades.
A scar, a defeat, an obsession. That's Sagat — a Muay Thai king whose life was changed by a single Shoryuken.
