Akuma: Character Profile
The most feared and respected character in Street Fighter is Akuma. He's no conventional boss — he's "ultimate power" itself, and the most classic hidden character in fighting-game history.
Living as a "demon"
Akuma (Gouki in Japan) was a prodigiously gifted Ansatsuken heir. But ordinary strength wasn't enough for him — he willingly let the Satsui no Hado consume him, trading his humanity for power piece by piece.
He killed his master Goutetsu and severed ties with his brother Gouken. Down that road, he made himself into a "demon" — not consumed by power, but embracing and mastering it.
Signature moves
Akuma's moves are all on the level of "annihilation":
- Shun Goku Satsu (Raging Demon): the ultimate art — black screen, a flash, a kanji, and the opponent is down, maximum menace.
- Goshoryuken, Shakunetsu Hadoken, Gohadoken: each carrying the terrifying weight of the Satsui no Hado.
- Ashura Senku: a high-speed teleport, appearing and vanishing at will.
The hidden-boss legend
Akuma first appeared as a "hidden boss": in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, he'd burst in and replace the normal boss only if the player met certain conditions. That "mysterious challenger suddenly appears" design made him one of the most famous hidden characters in fighting-game history.
Countless players practiced and retried just to catch a glimpse of him.
The loneliness of waiting
What makes Akuma special is that he has no ambition to "rule the world". His only wish is a strong opponent who can face him as an equal. And at the top of his list, always, is Ryu.
That "seeking a fight" loneliness lifts Akuma beyond the usual villain. He's terrifying, yet tinged with tragedy — a man who lived as power, and in the end was trapped by it.
Akuma is the darkest, coldest shadow in Street Fighter, and the heaviest "demon" in fighting-game history.
