KOF '96: Chizuru Kagura and the Birth of the Three Sacred Treasures Team

If '94–95 are the saga's setup, KOF '96 is the year the conspiracy fully unfolds. This chapter belongs to Chizuru Kagura and Goenitz.

The host of '96

The KOF '96 tournament was hosted by Chizuru Kagura of the Kagura (Yata) clan, one of the three treasure clans. Her motives were far from simple: her sister Maki had just been killed by Goenitz, and the whole duty of guarding the seal now rested on her alone. Chizuru's real aim in hosting was to find allies who'd fight beside her — especially Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami of the other two clans.

The fake Kyo and fake Iori

But Goenitz had already laid his trap. Manipulating Kagura's power, he created a "fake Kyo Kusanagi" and a "fake Iori Yagami" to stir up trouble and drive a wedge between the clans, tarnishing the real thing.

The ruse is devilishly clever: when the crowd sees a "Kyo Kusanagi" causing havoc in the ring, they can't help but doubt the genuine article. Fortunately the real Kyo and Iori saw through it and teamed up with Chizuru, foiling Goenitz's scheme.

The Three Sacred Treasures Team

After exposing the fakes, Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, and Chizuru Kagura formed the "Three Sacred Treasures Team" and declared war on the Orochi faction. It's the first true alliance of the three clans in the saga — and though the hatred between Kyo and Iori still simmered, the rivals set aside their grudge against a common enemy.

Facing the storm

The team's final opponent is Goenitz, head of the Four Heavenly Kings. In the '96 finale he descends in person to battle the team. After a grueling fight Goenitz falls, but he refuses to be sealed, choosing to summon a storm and take his own life — retiring Orochi's most important "executor" in the human world.

What '96 accomplished

KOF '96 is the saga's bridge: it cements the "Three Sacred Treasures Team" as the ultimate lineup; it pulls Orochi's faction out of the shadows; and it plants the biggest question of all — Goenitz is dead, but Orochi itself hasn't appeared. That arrival happens in KOF '97.
