KOF '97 Finale: The Revival of Orochi

Story Timeline 2026-08-19 about 4 min

KOF '97 is the Orochi saga's finale. In scale, twists, and sheer fatalism, this is the saga at its peak.

The New Faces Team: enemies in plain sight

Among the '97 entrants, the "New Faces Team" stands out: the sunny kid Chris, the sultry Shermie, and the brash bruiser Yashiro. Early on they look like ordinary young fighters — even a little endearing.

But the truth is that this team is three of the Hakkesshu's Four Heavenly Kings. Their real purpose in entering is to drain every fighter's life energy to fuel Orochi's revival.

The twist: your strongest ally turns enemy

At the tournament's midpoint, Orochi's will begins to stir. Iori and Leona, both carrying Orochi's blood, riot one after another — Iori killing Mature and Vice in his rampage, Leona teetering on the edge.

The reversals here are textbook: the strongest warriors can be turned into enemies by Orochi's power at any moment, and the mastermind is the most innocent-looking kid of all.

Orochi descends

Once enough life energy is gathered, the revival ritual begins. Yashiro and Shermie guard Chris, who offers his own body as the vessel — Orochi's will awakens through this "sunny kid" and descends in white-haired, red-eyed form, becoming the final boss of '97.

The final battle: Three Sacred Treasures Team vs. Orochi

Orochi's power is overwhelming: it commands the blood of Orochi, unleashes world-ending attacks, and, as the will of the Earth itself, seems unbeatable.

But the Three Sacred Treasures Team — Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru — don't back down. With Chizuru's aid, Kyo readies the legendary final art, preparing to settle things with Orochi once and for all. That art will decide the saga's ending.

The Orochi saga hits its highest note in '97. Conspiracy, passion, fate, sacrifice — that's the KOF '97 players still talk about today.
