A Preview of the Ash Arc (Those from the Past)
The Orochi saga is "mythology", the NESTS arc is "technology", and KOF's third major saga plays with time itself — the Ash arc (2003–XI).
Those from the Past: a clan of time
"Those from the Past" is a mysterious group whose members come from different eras, led by a figure named Saiki. Their goal is to manipulate the timeline and remake the world — and the Orochi clan is said to have deep ties to them.
The arc draws in characters from across the series: the descendants of the three treasure clans — Kyo, Iori, Chizuru — once again become the group's targets.
Ash, of the green flame
The arc's central figure is a mysterious young man named Ash Crimson. He wields a rare "green flame" and walks the line between good and evil — a foppish aristocrat on the surface, quietly executing his own plan underneath.
Ash's most shocking act is stealing Iori Yagami's blue flame in KOF 2003 — a move that shook the entire KOF timeline. What is he after? Who is he, really? That's the arc's biggest mystery.
A mind-bending time-twist
If the Orochi saga is a "duel of fates" and the NESTS arc a "conspiracy", the Ash arc is a "time paradox": characters from different eras converge, the truth of the past keeps being rewritten, and the whole series' timeline is reshuffled. Many players call it the "most brain-melting yet satisfying" story, because it tries to tie every previous arc's loose threads into a single timeline.
The series' closed loop
Look back at the whole KOF story: the Orochi saga is mythology, three clans sealing the Earth's will; the NESTS arc is science fiction, clones and gene-modding; the Ash arc is time-travel, rewrites and paradoxes. Together the three form KOF's complete worldview.
From the Yamata-no-Orochi myth to clone conspiracies to time-travel gambits, KOF spent decades building a world spanning myth, sci-fi, and fantasy. Our "Orochi Saga" series ends here — next stop, the story after Orochi.
