After the Orochi Saga: A Preview of the NESTS Arc

The Orochi saga is over, but KOF's story was only getting started. After Kyo sealed Orochi with Mu Shiki and vanished into the seal himself, a conspiracy far stranger than the Orochi saga surfaced — the NESTS arc.

The saga's aftermath

At the end of KOF '97, Kyo Kusanagi is missing. KOF '98 then arrives as a non-canon "dream match", letting players revisit characters from past games. The real story resumes in KOF '99, where we finally learn Kyo's fate: during his disappearance, he was captured by a shadowy organization.

The shadowy organization NESTS

The group is called "NESTS", an underground syndicate that controls bio-technology. They're obsessed with "manufacturing the strongest fighters" — and they set their sights on Kyo, the man who sealed Orochi. They capture him, harvest his genes, and try to replicate "the strongest" through science.

Cloned Kyo and K'

NESTS's most insane plan is cloning. They mass-produce "cloned Kyos" (copies of Kusanagi), and even graft Kyo's genes and flame power onto other fighters.

The most famous of these is K' (Kay-dash), the protagonist of the NESTS arc. K' is a warrior modified by NESTS, his hands able to conjure flame (injected with Kyo's genes), but the modification went wrong and left him amnesiac. Hunted by NESTS while searching for his past, he becomes the arc's central figure.

What the NESTS arc offers

Unlike the myth-based Orochi saga, the NESTS arc is a sci-fi conspiracy: clones, genetic modification, amnesiac soldiers, and internal power struggles, all of which refresh the story from KOF '99 to KOF 2001. Can Kyo reclaim his power? Can K' recover his memories? What is NESTS's endgame?

The Orochi saga is KOF's "mythology trilogy"; the NESTS arc is its "sci-fi trilogy". If you loved the saga's epic scale, the NESTS arc's intrigue and tech-noir flavor won't disappoint.
