Ukyo Tachibana: The Coughing Swordsman and the Flower He Never Reached

Samurai Shodown's roster is full of brutes, but Ukyo Tachibana feels like a sick man. He's terminally ill, coughing blood, yet he insists on carrying a sword everywhere. And this frail character became one of the most popular picks among Chinese players — famously, one of the most broken.

A swordsman who doesn't fight for fighting

Ukyo comes from a fallen samurai family and studied iaijutsu — the art of the single decisive draw. He has no interest in proving himself in battle. His heart belongs to one person: Kei Odagiri. To bring her a flower from the demon realm, he takes the road to that world on a failing body.

That motivation is unique in fighting-game history: others fight for honor or revenge. He fights for love.

The afterimage slash, universally called a "cheese move"

In game, Ukyo's signatures are the afterimage slash and the swallow slash. Old players know the point-blank afterimage chain is nearly a "bug" in the game, capable of blocking an opponent to death, and skilled players often ban him in high-level play. The old joke — "new players can win half their matches standing still with Ukyo" — is exaggeration, but it hints at his strength.

Moves that are both cool and strong, and a romantic heart — no wonder Ukyo got famous.

The flower was never picked

In Samurai Shodown II's ending, Ukyo goes deep into the demon realm to pick the magic flower and never comes back. Only Kei is left, staring at a plant in the snow every year. Fighting games rarely carry such a bleak ending: no triumphant return, just a story left unfinished.
