Berserk Iori: The Rampage and Killings of '97

The Blood of Orochi 2026-08-15 about 4 min

Among the Orochi saga's signature moments, "berserk Iori" ranks near the top. The normally cold, controlled Iori — once he riots, he becomes a killer who'd even take out his own teammates.

What "berserk" means

A "riot" (blood riot) is the state where someone carrying Orochi's blood loses all reason under specific triggers and their power surges. The eyes turn red, attacks turn savage, and it's an indiscriminate killing spree. And Iori is the blood's most famous carrier.

'97: the riot ignites

In KOF '97, Orochi's will is stirring, which directly agitates the blood inside Iori. As the tournament reaches its peak, Iori finally fails to suppress it and riots.

Berserk, he loses all sense of self, leaving only the instinct to kill. The first to suffer are the two Hakkesshu who'd been following him — Mature and Vice. They'd meant to use his Orochi blood, but against the berserk Iori they had no chance, and both were slain.

Riot vs. being controlled

There's a crucial distinction worth noting: a riot is "losing your reason", while Orochi's direct control is "being made a puppet". In '97, Orochi tried to fully control Iori through his blood, to make him its pawn.

But Iori did the one thing nobody expected — he resisted Orochi's control by sheer will, then struck back at Orochi itself. That's Iori at his finest: a man tangled in hatred and blood, who at the very moment he "should" surrender, chooses to be himself.

What berserk Iori means

Berserk Iori isn't just "Iori, but stronger" — he's tragedy made flesh. The blood inside him is a chain he can never shake, and every riot is one more loss of control over his own fate.

Worth noting: berserk Iori is also a hidden playable character in '97, his savage moves and screen-filling bloodlust making him one of the most sought-after hidden fighters in the arcades.
