What Is the Hakkesshu? The Soul Reincarnation Mechanism

Hakkesshu & Four Heavenly Kings 2026-08-09 about 4 min

Powerful as Orochi is, it needs servants to act in the human world. Those servants are the mysterious "Hakkesshu" of the Orochi saga.

What the Hakkesshu are

The Hakkesshu are Orochi's eight attendants, its agents in the human world. Chosen by Orochi itself, each wields power of the same source, with a single mission: prepare Orochi's revival, clear the obstacles, and destroy humanity.

Here's the crucial bit of lore: the Hakkesshu aren't a fixed set of eight people. Their souls reincarnate through the generations. When one generation dies, their power and will reawaken in descendants, passing to a new "host". That makes the Hakkesshu something like an immortal army spanning millennia — which is exactly why Orochi can keep plotting revivals.

Who's in it

  • The Four Heavenly Kings — Goenitz (wind/heaven), Yashiro Nanakase (earth), Shermie (lightning), and Chris (fire), the four highest-ranked core members.
  • Mature and Vice — the female members, quietly watching over Iori Yagami.
  • Gaidel — Leona's father, a member whose blood is the source of Leona's Orochi blood.

Don't trust the surface

The most dramatic thing about the Hakkesshu is that they don't look like villains. The "New Faces Team" in KOF '97 — Chris, Shermie, and Yashiro — come off early on as three perfectly ordinary young fighters; Chris even seems like a sunny, innocent kid. Only at the midpoint does the truth drop: the whole New Faces Team are Hakkesshu, and their real goal in entering the tournament is to drain every fighter's life energy to fuel Orochi's revival.

That "the person next to you was the mastermind all along" twist is the saga's plot at its most gripping.

The Four Heavenly Kings: the peak

Within the Hakkesshu, the four highest-ranked members are the "Four Heavenly Kings", each tied to a natural force — heaven, earth, lightning, and fire. Closest to Orochi and strongest of all, they're the absolute core of the saga's villain camp.

Remember the name "Hakkesshu", and you'll see who's really pulling the strings behind every one of Orochi's revival schemes.
